Closest fit first: the smallest limit that still covers the rating your lawn needs, then the lower price, then the larger slope margin.

Does not fit17

Each line gives the reason in numbers.

This page ranks the 48 mowers in the Botsize dataset that are sold in the EU. Prices are the maker's list price, or the price its page showed that month (sometimes a sale price), with the month we read it.

To work out your own lawn size, the lawn area calculator adds up the shapes of your garden.

Choosing a mower without a boundary wire

With "no wire" chosen, every model that needs a boundary wire does not fit, whatever its rating. The models left steer by satellite positioning, LiDAR, a camera or a mix of them, and each family asks something different of the lawn.

  • Satellite positioning needs open sky over the lawn, and some models need an antenna at home. The antenna and sky view guide covers where it goes.
  • LiDAR measures the distance to walls, hedges and trunks, so it does not depend on the sky.
  • Camera only models keep to what they see as grass, so a clear border between the lawn and the rest helps them.

The card under each result names the navigation in plain words, such as "No wire, needs an antenna at home". If trees cover part of the lawn, set the sky question in the sizer: satellite models that have no camera or LiDAR then carry a warning. The wire and wire-free guide compares the families in full.

Questions about wire-free mowers

Does a wire-free mower always need an antenna?
No. Some satellite models need one at home, others use a network correction service over mobile data, and LiDAR and camera models need none. The result card says which.
How does a wire-free mower know the edge?
From a map made in the maker's app, kept with satellite positioning, LiDAR or a camera. Changing a bed means redrawing the map instead of moving a wire.
