Sizing for a 500 m² lawn

A 500 m² lawn is 5,382 sq ft, about an eighth of an acre. For this lawn that means 600 m² (6,458 sq ft) on one open shape, 675 m² (7,266 sq ft) with some beds and trees, and 750 m² (8,073 sq ft) for a complex layout. A mower allowed to run in daytime only needs 1.5 times as much again: 1,013 m² (10,898 sq ft) for a typical shape.

Several models are rated for 500 or 600 m². Both cover the lawn, but on a typical shape neither covers the margin, so both read tight. A model rated for 800 m² or more fits with room for the beds and trees.

At this size most families of navigation are on offer: boundary wire, satellite positioning, camera and LiDAR. The lawn decides which suits it. Trees over the lawn favor wire or LiDAR, a lawn with no clear border favors wire or satellite. The wire and wire-free guide sets out what each needs.
