How to measure your lawn

  1. Sketch the lawn from above and split it into rectangles, circles and triangles. Round curved edges off to the nearest shape.
  2. Measure each shape with a long tape or a measuring wheel. For a first estimate, pace it out: count your steps and measure one step.
  3. Add the shapes, then take away the beds, patios, ponds and paths that sit inside them.
  4. Leave out grass the mower cannot reach, such as a strip behind a gate it cannot pass.

Starting from the lot size

The lot size on a deed, plat or property record covers the whole parcel, buildings included. Take away the footprint of the house and garage (the ground they stand on, not the floor area inside), the drive, paths and patio, and the beds. What is left is close to the area of grass.

How exact it needs to be

The mower sizer adds a margin of 20 to 50% for the shape of the lawn. That margin is far larger than the error of a careful tape measurement.

Questions about lawn area

Does the grass under trees count?
Yes, when grass grows there and the mower can drive under the branches. Take away the bed around a trunk only when it is large.
How many square feet are in an acre?
An acre is 43,560 sq ft, about 4,047 m². One square meter is about 10.76 sq ft.
